Florida’s Hometown Airline supports South Florida nonprofits and disaster relief initiatives via Corporate Social Responsibility efforts and The Spirit Charitable Foundation

Spirit Airlines today announced plans to donate more than $200,000 in the second half of 2021 alongside ticket donations and program sponsorships for a total of 17 nonprofit organizations, including many philanthropic efforts locally in South Florida. The donations come from the Miramar-based carrier’s longstanding Corporate Social Responsibility efforts and from The Spirit Charitable Foundation, with ongoing support for nonprofit organizations focused on education, the environment, the arts, service members and disaster recovery.

“We believe that change starts by giving back and making a meaningful impact in people’s lives,” said Lania Rittenhouse, President of The Spirit Charitable Foundation and Vice President of Guest Experience and Brand for Spirit Airlines. “We are proud to support many esteemed organizations that work tirelessly to support those in need in our local community and beyond. As part of these charitable contributions, we will continue our commitment to our core areas of charitable support that mean so much to the entire Spirit Family.”

Spirit’s larger commitments under its latest round of philanthropy include the following organizations:

  • Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, Inc.: Sponsorship agreement to support the Arsht Center’s mission to create meaningful community-building experiences for the citizens of Miami-Dade County and South Florida through active learning and live theatrical experiences. Each year, the Arsht Center offers more than 100 culturally diverse and inclusive events serving 40,000 people of all ages — many enhanced by the Arsht Center’s relationship with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, local teaching artists, arts organizations and resident companies. Spirit Airlines is the presenting sponsor of the Live at Knight performance series and a supporting sponsor of Kitty Hawk – A Musical Adventure, a live theater performance and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) initiative that aims to educate seventh graders in public schools about the Wright brothers’ world-changing discovery of flight.

  • American Red Cross: Donations to help support relief efforts following natural disasters in both Haiti and Louisiana. Spirit donated to the American Red Cross in the wake of the earthquake that struck Haiti on Aug. 14, 2021. Donations help affected individuals and families recover from the earthquake by providing safe refuge for displaced residents, as well as nourishing meals, cleanup kits and other relief items to bring comfort in times of uncertainty. Spirit also donated tickets to medical professionals traveling to Haiti to provide care. An additional donation was made in August to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, which struck Louisiana on Aug. 29, 2021.
  • Broward Center for the Performing Arts: Sponsorship agreement as the Broward Center’s exclusive airline partner, to help build community through the arts. The Broward Center presents more than 700 performances each year to more than 700,000 patrons and offers one of the largest arts-in-education programs in the U.S. Each year, more than 150,000 Broward County school children take part in educational performances free of charge at the Broward Center. Last year, streaming programs took these performances into the classrooms. The success of the Broward Center has opened access to the arts for broad segments of the local population and created an arts education program that is a model for the nation. The new Spirit Club Level of the Broward Center includes a newly designed lounge with Spirit’s famous yellow and black colors and offers an all-inclusive premium value experience with comfortable lounge amenities and private access to theater seats to view the show.

  • Community Foundation of Broward: Donation for its environmental philanthropy initiative, Eco Broward, to help make Broward County a resilient and sustainable place to live by funding projects that demonstrate measurable outcomes in four areas — Coastal Resilience, Habitat Protection, Energy Consumption, and Water Quality. The Community Foundation of Broward, founded in 1984, helps individuals, families and businesses create personalized charitable funds that support game-changing philanthropy. As a grantmaking public charity, the Community Foundation provides leadership to find solutions to issues that matter most to Broward County residents.

  • Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida: Donation for tree planting events in South Florida as part of the Girl Scouts’ new environmental and conservation initiative to help address climate change one tree at a time. Launched in April 2021, the Girl Scout Tree Promise sets out to plant five million trees across the country in five years, and to protect and honor new and existing trees. Girls Scouts everywhere will plant, protect, and honor trees in their backyards, camps, communities, and states to help develop more sustainable communities for future generations.

  • Latino Pilots Association (LPA): Donation for scholarships to help foster the education, growth, and success of Latino pilots in aviation. LPA is committed to empower, support, and mentor the underrepresented in communities by providing education programs, training, mentoring, and scholarships. Scholarships are available to a diverse group of recipients to help further careers in aviation-related fields and advise future generations of professional aviators.

The Spirit Charitable Foundation believes that change starts by giving back. We are committed to inspiring positive change in the communities where we live and work. We invest in organizations that have a meaningful social impact on the lives of children & families, service members, and the environment, through Team Member volunteerism, monetary and in-kind donations.
